Medical Detox in Columbus, Ohio

Medical detox at The Recovery Village Columbus provides 24/7 medically supervised withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines and other drugs at our Groveport campus, just southeast of Columbus. Our team manages symptoms with medication when appropriate and helps you move straight into ongoing treatment. Call (614) 362-1686. Walk-ins are accepted 24/7.

What Is Medical Detox?

Medical detox is the process of safely stopping alcohol or drugs while a medical team monitors and treats withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal can range from uncomfortable to dangerous. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures and delirium tremens, and should always be medically supervised. Opioid withdrawal is rarely life-threatening but is intensely uncomfortable, and medications such as buprenorphine can ease it. Detox is a first step, not a complete treatment, so our team plans your next level of care from day one.

Alcohol, Opioid and Benzodiazepine Detox

Withdrawal looks different depending on the substance, so your detox plan does too.

  • Alcohol: symptoms often start 6 to 24 hours after the last drink and can include tremors, sweating, anxiety and, in severe cases, seizures or delirium tremens. Our team monitors you around the clock and uses medication to prevent dangerous complications. See the alcohol withdrawal timeline.
  • Opioids and fentanyl: withdrawal usually begins within a day of the last dose and brings body aches, nausea, anxiety and strong cravings. Medications such as buprenorphine can ease symptoms, and your team can talk with you about continuing medication-assisted treatment. Learn more about opioid withdrawal and fentanyl withdrawal.
  • Benzodiazepines: stopping suddenly can cause seizures, so medications such as Xanax, Klonopin and Ativan are tapered gradually under medical supervision. Learn more about benzodiazepine withdrawal.

24/7 Admissions and Walk-Ins

You can call our admissions team at (614) 362-1686 any time, day or night. Walk-ins are welcome, and same-day admission is often possible when it’s medically appropriate. Learn about walk-in admissions.

What to Bring to Detox

Bring a photo ID, relevant medical records or a list of your health care providers, contact information for family members, a form of payment and up to $200 in cash. Pack comfortable, season-appropriate clothing. Leave alcohol, drugs, CBD and THC products, refillable vapes and weapons at home. Our inpatient rehab page has the full packing list.

After Detox

Detox manages withdrawal, but it doesn’t treat the causes of addiction. Most people move straight from detox into residential treatment on the same campus, then step down to partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care. Your team starts planning your next level of care on your first day.

FAQs About Medical Detox

Is medical detox necessary?

Medical detox is recommended if you are physically dependent on a substance and may have significant withdrawal when you stop, especially:

  • Alcohol
  • Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan)
  • Opioids, including fentanyl, heroin, oxycodone, hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco), Percocet and tramadol
  • Sleep medications (Ambien, Lunesta)
  • Stimulants (methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription stimulants), when withdrawal involves severe depression, exhaustion or co-occurring medical or mental health needs

An admissions assessment determines whether you need medical detox or can start at another level of care.

Detox commonly lasts about seven to ten days. The exact length depends on the substance, how much and how long you’ve used, and your physical health. Your medical team will give you an estimate after your evaluation.

Detoxing at home isn’t recommended, especially from alcohol or benzodiazepines, whose withdrawal can cause seizures and delirium tremens. Even when withdrawal isn’t dangerous, as with most opioid withdrawal, symptoms are hard to tolerate alone and often lead to a return to use. Medically supervised detox provides 24/7 monitoring and medication when it’s needed. Read more about the risks of alcohol detox at home.

The most commonly used medications to treat alcohol withdrawal are controlled doses of sedatives like chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium) or lorazepam (Ativan). These medications are used only under limited, short-term circumstances and are reduced as soon as safely possible, but they can be used alongside other medications that can help address alcohol withdrawal symptoms. More mild cases of alcohol withdrawal may involve only supportive medications (such as ibuprofen for headache, or use of a safe sleep aid) and medical monitoring.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available when medically appropriate. For opioid withdrawal and opioid use disorder, options may include buprenorphine (Suboxone), methadone in coordination with appropriate dosing protocols, or naltrexone once detox is complete. Your clinical team will decide what’s safe and appropriate for you.

Several federal laws can help. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may give eligible employees unpaid, job-protected leave for treatment, and the Americans with Disabilities Act protects many people in recovery from discrimination. Learn more about rehab and your job.

Insurance may cover some or all of medical detox, although copays and deductibles may apply. We’re in network with many major plans, including Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Medical Mutual of Ohio and UBH/Optum, and Optum Medicaid for detox. Verify your insurance online, or ask about options if you don’t have insurance.

Often, yes. Call (614) 362-1686 or walk in, and our admissions team will complete a quick assessment. Same-day admission is often possible when it’s medically appropriate.

OUR PROCESS

What to Expect During the Detox Process

Every detox plan is individualized. When you arrive, a member of our 24-hour nursing staff completes an initial evaluation that may include:

  • A personalized assessment of your substance use
  • Drug and alcohol screening
  • A co-occurring mental health evaluation
  • A comprehensive medical assessment
  • Psychological, risk and social assessments

You then begin detox in our inpatient unit. Detox commonly lasts about seven to ten days, though every case is different. Withdrawal symptoms depend on the substance, the amount and length of use, and your health. They can range from headaches, irritability and trouble sleeping to tremors, vomiting and, with alcohol or benzodiazepines, seizures. Our medical team monitors you around the clock and adjusts care as symptoms change.

I felt really safe in this facility. I was in their mental health residential unit called Oasis. Groups were good, especially the ones ran by Sharon. I felt the nursing staff & BHTs were very kind & caring. I made a lot of really good friends that I plan to stay in touch with. I have been to many other facilities & this one was by far the best I’ve been to. Also a shoutout to my therapist, James, who was exceptional. I highly recommend sending yourself or your loved ones to this place when they’re in need.

Tawnie was the first person I spoke to before, and she was incredible. I've never had anyone. Give me such honest advice about real world life struggles and addiction. I love this place. Every other place just wants the song of the dance. Just to get your insurance or money. But talking to Tawnie for a while proved that is not necessarily always true comment. And there is help out there. And there are people who truly do care about you. Thanks Tawnie! God bless. And to everyone who is struggling do not ever give up. You will always be in my prayers.

Not a day goes by that I don't think about the time I spent at Recovery Village. I'm currently 228 days sober. The entire staff was amazing. At no time did I feel like I was in my battle alone. I would love to return and volunteer, and tell my story. As I said before. You will not find a better staff to help you. I was able to learn something from each counselor. The BHT'S were also amazing. Recovery Village. Thank you for a better life. If I can ever give back. Please let me know!!!

The Recovery Village Village is an amazing place that provided me with a real opportunity to change my life for the better. If you are ready for change, the staff at RVC will go above and beyond to help you achieve your goals. RVC has THE BEST peer support in the field! Luke is the soul of this facility and works miracles for the clients on a daily basis. This place wouldn’t be the same without his kindness and dedication to helping others enter recovery. Judy and Jordan were also always willing to go above and beyond to provide me with the support and tools that i needed to make life-long changes so i can be the best version of myself. I can’t say enough good things about this facility and its staff. If you take the first step and ask for help, RVC will help take you the rest of the way. Thank you all so much for the love and support that i needed to get where i am today! With love, “Scooter” Bill Rhinehart
