Delaware County’s 2024 Overdose Picture

It’s easy to assume addiction is a problem for somewhere else. Local data says otherwise. The Delaware Public Health District’s 2024 Annual Accidental Overdose Report, which uses preliminary Ohio Department of Health vital statistics, counts 19 Delaware County residents who died of an accidental overdose in 2024: 11 men and 8 women, ranging in age from 22 to 63, with an average age of 45.

A few other findings from that report stand out:

  • Deaths have come down from a peak of 36 in 2021 to 20 in 2023 and 19 in 2024.
  • Fentanyl was by far the most common substance found in those who died, followed by cocaine and xylazine.
  • Twelve of the 19 deaths happened in a residence, such as the person’s own home or a friend’s or partner’s home.
  • There were 239 emergency department visits for suspected drug overdose among Delaware County residents in 2024, a decrease from 2023.
  • 52% of people who overdosed were known to the Delaware County jail, and 45% of overdose deaths involved people with prior jail involvement.

Local Resources in Delaware County

The Delaware-Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services Board is the public addiction and mental health board for Delaware and Morrow counties. These local resources can help alongside, before or after rehab:

  • HelpLine crisis line (24/7): 1-800-684-2324. HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties is the board’s listed crisis contact.
  • Free naloxone: The Delaware Public Health District’s Project DAWN program distributed 484 naloxone kits and 429 fentanyl test strips in 2024. A 24/7 naloxone vending machine is also available in the lobby of the Delaware County Jail, 844 US-42 N in Delaware, installed in July 2025.
  • Family support: NAMI Mid-Ohio (740-815-1767) is the NAMI affiliate for Delaware County and offers family support groups and classes such as Family-to-Family.
  • Emergencies: For a suspected overdose or any immediate danger, call 911. You can also call or text 988 at any time.

If a family member was recently released from jail, the risk is especially high. The health district’s report notes that people recently released from jail or correctional facilities are over 10 times more likely to experience an opioid overdose. Driving to Groveport From Delaware County

From downtown Delaware, the trip to 3964 Hamilton Square Blvd is roughly 41 miles and about 45 minutes in normal traffic, typically heading south toward Columbus on I-71 and then around the I-270 outerbelt toward Groveport. From southern Delaware County communities such as Powell, Lewis Center or the Delaware County side of Westerville, the drive is typically shorter. Morning and evening traffic on I-270 can add time, so plan ahead for an admission appointment.

What Treatment Looks Like in Groveport

The Recovery Village Columbus opened in 2017 and is accredited by The Joint Commission. Care follows a continuum, and you start wherever your assessment recommends:

  • Medical detox in private rooms with 24-hour nursing and medical monitoring. How long it lasts depends on the substance and your health. Medication-assisted treatment is offered when medically appropriate.
  • Residential rehab, commonly 28 to 30 days after detox, with individual and group therapy.
  • Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs that step down the intensity of care as you stabilize.
  • Co-occurring disorder care. NIMH notes that many people with substance use disorders also have depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder, and that integrated care treats both together.

No. The Recovery Village Columbus has a single campus, in Groveport in southern Franklin County. Delaware County residents come to Groveport for detox and inpatient care.

Is 19 overdose deaths a lot for Delaware County?

Any number is too many, and each death affected a family, workplace and neighborhood. The 2024 count is lower than the 2021 peak of 36, but emergency departments still saw 239 suspected overdose visits from county residents that year, so the risk is ongoing.

Can I show up without calling first?
