The Reward Circuit

Tolerance and Anhedonia
The brain compensates for flooding by reducing dopamine receptors and production. More substance is needed for the same effect (tolerance), and natural rewards — food, relationships, accomplishments — no longer register (anhedonia). The person needs the substance to feel normal.
Craving and Memory
The hippocampus and amygdala encode powerful associations between cues and the substance. Encountering those cues — a place, a person, a feeling — triggers dopamine anticipation and craving, often years into recovery.
