Alcohol relieves anxiety — that is why so many anxious people drink. It also causes anxiety, progressively, through neurological adaptation that most drinkers never recognize until the anxiety between drinks has become worse than the anxiety they started with. How Alcohol Calms Anxiety
Alcohol enhances GABA, the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter — the same mechanism as Xanax and Valium. It also suppresses glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter. The result is rapid, reliable anxiety relief. This is genuine pharmacology, not placebo.
How Alcohol Causes Anxiety
With regular drinking, the brain adapts: it reduces its own GABA sensitivity and increases glutamate to compensate. Between drinks, the brain is now more anxious than baseline — the rebound. The person drinks to relieve the rebound. Over months and years, baseline anxiety worsens. The morning “hangxiety” is this mechanism in miniature; alcohol withdrawal is its extreme.
Breaking the Cycle
Stopping alcohol — with medical detox if physically dependent — allows the brain to recalibrate over weeks to months. Anxiety typically improves substantially with sustained sobriety. The underlying anxiety disorder, if one exists, needs treatment: CBT, SSRIs or SNRIs, buspirone. Benzodiazepines are avoided because they replicate the cycle.
