Relapse prevention is the core clinical skill set of addiction recovery. It is not willpower — it is a set of learnable techniques for recognizing risk, managing craving, and responding to lapses before they become full relapses. The Recovery Village Columbus teaches relapse prevention throughout residential treatment and step-down care.
Identifying Triggers
Triggers are personal: people, places, emotions, times of day, physical states, and situations associated with past use. Mapping them specifically — not “stress” but “arguments with my brother” — makes them manageable. Residential treatment includes structured trigger identification.
HALT
Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired — the four states that most reliably precede relapse. Checking these regularly and addressing them before they escalate is a simple, effective habit.
Coping Skills
Urge surfing — observing craving rise and fall without acting. Distraction and delay — cravings pass in 15 to 30 minutes. Calling someone. Leaving the situation. Cognitive techniques for challenging permission-giving thoughts (“one won’t hurt”). Physical activity.

Lapse vs. Relapse
A lapse — a single use — need not become a relapse — a return to sustained use. The abstinence violation effect (“I’ve blown it, might as well keep going”) turns lapses into relapses. Planning in advance for what to do after a lapse prevents this.
Protective Factors
Peer support. Continued therapy. Medication for opioid and alcohol use disorder. Structure and routine. Sleep, nutrition, exercise. Meaningful activity. Aftercare planning builds these in. See returning to rehab after relapse.
