Cravings are the central challenge of early recovery — intense, sometimes overwhelming urges to use that arrive with or without obvious triggers. They are not a sign of weakness or failure but a predictable neurological phenomenon. They can be managed, and they diminish over time.
What Cravings Are
Craving is the brain’s reward system — conditioned by repeated substance use — signaling that the substance is needed. Cues associated with past use (places, people, emotions, times of day) trigger dopamine anticipation and the urge to use. Cravings typically peak within minutes and pass within 15 to 30 minutes if not acted on.
Urge Surfing
Rather than fighting the craving, observe it: notice where it is in the body, how it rises, peaks, and falls. Cravings are waves; they pass. Mindfulness-based approaches teach this skill, which reduces both craving intensity and the likelihood of acting on it.
CBT Techniques
Identify and challenge permission-giving thoughts. Delay and distract. Play the tape forward — imagine the full consequences of using, not just the first drink. Call someone. Change the environment. Have a written plan ready before the craving hits.
